THE BOOK

A book that sits out on the counter at the clinic in the pasture. A note on the very first page reads:

This is a compilation of information we've obtained or figured out so far. If you have anything to add, please write it in.

Should you try to remove the book from the clinic, you'll find a green sheep blocking your exit. The sheep will not move until you set the book back down.

Holy & light based magic has a similar but far less efficacious effect to the sunflowers on the mist and mist creatures, in an emergency. Sunflowers should still remain one's first offense and defense.

On the flip side, avoid using Darkness based abilities if at all possible. It will not work out well for you.

Re: THE WOLF KING

[personal profile] mykidisthebest 2023-09-15 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
-Some of this is also Mist information

-Hey look this is some tragic backstory on the wolf king as told by the snake, or something.

-Blossom is a traitorous fiend responsible for the “disappearance” of the Wolf King’s only child. The Snake also said that “they” killed the Wolf King’s only child. “They” implies Blossom and Stormy? The Snake mentioned both “disappearance” and “killed,” so it’s unclear if a body was found or not. Honestly it’s also unclear if she actually killed anyone or not. Various conversations have implied that the Wolf King’s child did indeed only disappear and not die, so take this series of events with a grain of salt.

-The Snake heard of this information secondhand; this murder happened “before his time”. But as a “descendant of [the Wolf King’s] loyal servants” he’s been tasked with “bringing her and her ward (Stormy, probably?) to justice” in the form of destroying the pasture. He claims that the Weeds that help will be “fairly compensated” by both himself and the king. And that he’ll return Weeds safely to their realms. (Just as a note, it seems highly unlikely that he knows how to do that.)

-The Wolf King is a king who rules beyond the mist. (He is apparently in the mist, since multiple people have encountered him.) According to the Snake, he is “Kind, benevolent, and powerful!” His words, not mine. And he rules over all “the people of beasts”.

-There aren’t any other servants outside of the Mist other than the Snake. “Traitors don’t count,” implying Blossom was a servant at one point?

-The Mist does not harm any fanged beasts. This so far includes: the Snake, Red, and the Weeds. No idea if this counts weeds that have become members of a flock, we haven't tested it yet.

-The Snake confirmed that Weeds can technically walk through the Mist just fine, although it wouldn’t stop the monsters within it from attacking. So, the monsters that live in the Mist also probably count as fanged beasts.

-Anyone under Blossom’s protection is deemed a “sheep” and can’t get through the Mist (even if they’re an actual fanged beast). The sheep are trying to keep the Mist at bay on purpose, presumably for this reason.

-Even though Weeds aren’t under Blossom’s protection, she could still send them back home like she does to the members of Flocks. The problem is that who gets sent back is random.

-Weeds now have the Wolf King’s Blessing. This means they can unnecessarily summon demons to make everyone’s lives more difficult.

-The Snake mentioned “that wretch” also has the blessing, possibly Blossom? He doesn’t seem to know how she’s using her powers.

THE LOCALS (I'm so sorry he writes like this)

[personal profile] finalbows 2023-09-03 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Those who have resided in this pasture since before our arrival are all more than they seem. Their unassuming, moogle pint-sized forms are in fact assumed: we have seen occasional glimpses of an alternate state, where they instead more closely resemble humans in size and features.

It appears this state cannot currently be sustained by them long-termly, however. There is a strong chance their current miens are the result of a powerful curse or ritual, that we do not yet understand.

Even the small meandering mild-mannered unnamed sheep who hardly seem all that keen of mind are actually learning and observing from us all the time; our serving as "role models" is Blossom's stated intent behind our presence. They ARE, actually, picking things up from you. There are people sleeping in there, that we are somehow slowly waking up.

They have to date exhibited the ability to count, read and write, perform simple tasks, play instruments, recall simple information, discern connections between people, and express unique preferences.

Also, as of recently, the absent-minded little puffballs appear to have begun worshipping us as gods. Treat your newfound divinity responsibly☆!

- The power granted to Weeds by the Snake originates from Ceo, son of the Wolf King. If Ceo is restrained, so too will be the power he shares.

This patronage also allows him to assume control of a Weed's actions.

Overview

[personal profile] wants_the_phd 2023-09-06 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
  • Limbus is a plant found deep in the forest that can be used for fabricating replacement body parts.
  • The only part of the plant necessary for crafting body parts is the nectar, which, when mixed with animal proteins, can be used in two ways:
    1. Proteins and Limbus nectar can be mixed together to form a dough, which can be molded into the shape of the body part one wishes to create. Once the dough is pressed to the desired location on a living body, it will adhere and swiftly transform into a working, functional replacement of said body part.
    2. Protein and Limbus nectar can be mixed together and planted in the ground. The body part (or an entire body) will then grow from the ground on a vine.
See the Limbus Recipes for more detailed instructions.

  • It is possible to not only replace, but add parts to a body. For example: adding extra legs to a sheep.
  • Body parts created with Limbus nectar will not take the properties of flesh until attached to a living body. i.e. Yet-unattached body parts are no substitute for edible meat and taste like ash.
  • Fabricated body parts can be attached to any creature made of flesh.
  • A fully grown body may contain any "soul", even that of someone for whom the body has not been crafted. For example, the "soul" of Person A could be placed into a replica of the body of Person B.
  • Presumably, the "soul" of a deceased person can be added to the fabricated body by placing the body in the fountain, upon which time the body shall acquire the soul of the deceased and transform into living flesh and blood.
The uses of Limbus is the subject of ongoing research. This information will be updated as more data becomes available.

Acquiring Limbus

[personal profile] wants_the_phd 2023-09-06 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The Limbus plant grows approximately three miles into the forest. For exact location, contact Fantasia on Bluebell for a detailed map.

The trail passes through a large grove of honeysuckle. This flowering vine will cause immediate and severe fatigue to anyone with latent magical or supernatural powers (though it does not seem to have any effect on flock abilities.) Additionally, a hostile, plantlike creature resides in this grove, camouflaged as vines. It is recommended that any party in search of Limbus include at least one non-magical individual with some amount of combat ability to drive back this creature. Though it has numerous grasping tentacles to entangle its prey, it is nevertheless vulnerable to even simple weapons.

The Limbus plant is found near a pool of a thick, milky substance. This liquid is the nectar that is used to create replacement body parts, and this is the only part of the plant that needs to be collected for this purpose. WARNING: do NOT allow this liquid to come in contact with bare flesh, as it will immediately dissolve any organic matter.

There are ongoing attempts to propagate Limbus within the pasture to reduce the need for this dangerous journey. For more information, contact Azdaja of Rose or the pharmacist of this clinic.

[attached are sketches of the honeysuckle and limbus plants, as well as a pretty decent likeness of The Pharmacist. There is an arrow pointing to her collar with the label "black".]

Limbus bulbs

[personal profile] wants_the_phd 2023-09-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Around the roots of the main Limbus plant are small shoots. When carefully dug from the ground, these yield both a bulb and a sack of limbus nectar.

[A sketch]

Unfortunately, the bulbs will not grow outside the area in which the original plant is found, so they cannot be used to propagate the plant within the pasture. As of this writing, the main plant found deep in the forest is the only known source of nectar.

KINDLY DO NOT DIG UP OR OTHERWISE HARM THE MAIN PLANT, AS WE CURRENTLY HAVE NO WAY OF PROPAGATING IT.

While the sack of liquid attached to the bulb can be used in the same way as Limbus nectar, the bulb, when ingested, will restore any part of the body that is currently missing. Apparently this works even if only a head remains, but this has not yet been tested. Also, the process is said to be quite painful. Due to the rarity of this resource and the discomfort of its use, one should endeavor to use them only when Limbus sap alone will not be sufficient or ideal.

WARNING: Do NOT eat a Limbus bulb if you are not missing any body parts. This will cause violent and uncontrolled growth of flesh throughout the body.

Further research is ongoing.

Limbus recipes

[personal profile] wants_the_phd 2024-01-09 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
After much trial and effort, these are the most potent combinations of limbus and protein we have found for different applications.

Proteins that can be used: Bones, flesh, blood. Fresh, frozen, or dried.
Proteins that cannot be used: Claws, nails, hair, scales, milk, plant* proteins.

*Plant proteins will work, but will result in abominations. See sketches attached.

=====

Growing from the ground:
● 4 oz limbus <-- flat rate to initiate growth.
● 2 oz protein + 1/8 oz protein for every pound of body weight.

Example: to grow a 6.5 lb arm, you need 4 oz limbus, plus 2.81 oz (2 +6.5(0.125)) blood

Pros:
● Body parts can be grown using small amounts of limbus.
● Body part replica is exact.
● Seems to last on the vine indefinitely without need for refrigeration. (So far. Tests still ongoing.)

Cons:
● Protein MUST be from the donor you wish to recreate. Gatordawg protein will grow gatordawg limbs, etc.
● Takes time. See below:
Day 0 - Limbus/protein mixture planted in ground
Day 1 - Plant sprouts and starts setting fruit
Day 2 - A limb will be ready
Day 3 - Half a body will be ready
Day 4 - A body will be ready
Day 5 - A LARGE body will be ready

=====

Sculpting like clay:
● Amount of limbus needed is (full weight of the body part)-4 oz
● Amount of protein needed is (amount of limbus)*0.04 <-- i/e. 1:25 protein:limbus ratio

Example: to sculpt a 6.5 lb arm, you'd need 100 oz of limbus and 4 oz protein.
(6.5 lbs in oz = 104 oz. 104-4 oz = 100 oz. 100*0.04=4 oz. )

Pros:
● Immediate results.
● Protein can be from any donor.

Cons:
● Replica often retains cosmetic plantlike properties (bark texture, leaves, etc.)
● Uses large amounts of limbus.
● Must be refrigerated or frozen if it isn't used immediately.

For the sake of convenience when calculating limbus/protein amounts, refer to the charts on the following pages.

[Use this widget to calculate how much limbus or protein it takes to make a body part! Note that this is JUST FOR FUN and you don't have to adhere to these quantities. Go with your plant-based heart.]

Tl;DR:
▶ For very small parts like eyes or hands, use the clay method!
▶ For large parts like legs, use the in-ground method!
▶ If someone is dead and needs a new body, use the in-ground method!
▶ If someone is still alive but needs more than half a body to stay that way, use a limbus bulb!

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR NEW ARRIVALS

[personal profile] mykidisthebest 2023-09-15 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
-Blossom brought everyone here with her spell book, via performing some kind of ritual. She was calling for help from “Strong Personalities” but “accidentally” called everyone to the pasture instead. The implication seems to be that she intended to call some people, but not this many people. Or that she intended to just keep calling groups of people until she found a bunch that were willing to stay. Regardless, she still had housing available for everyone who arrived. While here, everyone is meant to inspire the empty husks--the sheep without souls that wander the pasture--and to inspire the world itself.

-In order to send everyone home (because she messed up and brought way too many people/unwilling people) Blossom asked for a blood sacrifice for her ritual spell. That turned into a mess, a demon ram was summoned that was pissed at the lack of proper blood sacrifice, killed all of Rose, and then left.

[There’s a doodle of Blossom being possessed by a gloopy demon ram.]

-When Rose died they met “Death,” which is an actual three-headed coyote(?) or canine demon of some kind that they could speak to. She promptly kicked Rose out of her realm and with everyone’s assistance they were able to return to their healed-up bodies.

-Despite all of the mess, the ritual sort of worked. The fountain in the middle of town is the portal that can send people home! But it only works randomly; people have no way of knowing when it will pull someone home. Jumping into the fountain does nothing.

-Blossom was referred to as “Priestess” by Death and probably others that I can’t be bothered to remember. I don’t know if the Snake knows that term, he only calls her “traitor”.

-There are were?? demon rams in the forest. A few members of Thistle followed Red into the mist surrounding this place and found a demon ram in a cave that appeared to have turned quite a few people into gold statues. The demon asked for a sacrifice in order to lift some of the mist; the demon specifically asked Thistle’s shepherd for a sacrifice and not anyone else present. They refused, but the ram still attempted to turn one of them into a gold statue and they fled. (Later they went back and blew him up.)

-The sheep are weird! The sheep (aside from Blossom and Stormy) used to look completely dead inside, like empty, lifeless husks. Now they will move around and do things, but only after they’ve been trained. That’s weird, what’s up with that.

-Like a day or two after everyone arrived, the Snake approached Bluebell and lied to them, saying Death needed their help, and tricked them all into dying and putting a collar on Death. The Snake somehow used this to steal her powers and use an aspect of her (her Sight, specifically) to ask the rest of the Flocks questions about death. Lily intentionally died so that they could rip open the underworld and help Bluebell come back to life. Lily and Clover still “failed” the ritual by not answering the questions in the way Death preferred and ended up with adverse side effects (phantom limbs). After that, Death's Eye has remained on the fountain in the middle of town. Please look up notes on Death for more information.

[There’s a doodle of the Snake using Death’s Sight.]

-The Snake brought the “black collars” aka “Weeds” to the pasture by harnessing the power of Death that he'd stolen.

-We “borrowed” Blossom’s spell book in order to see if any additional information could be gleaned from it that she wouldn’t reveal herself, since she is unfortunately unnecessarily cagey towards the people she claims to want to help.

-Anyone except Blossom reading the book is known to have adverse effects and could possibly summon a demon ram or turn them into a wolf.

-Attempting to read Blossom's spell book summoned some skeleton wolves out of the ground to attack. The skeleton wolves all had bells around their necks, like the ones that the current flocks wear; we now know that there are sheep and wolf bones buried all over the pasture and that there are things in the mist that can turn people into wolves. If wolves or monsters that are inside of the mist bite you then you turn into a werewolf and you need either a weird blood ritual where you die or some wolfsbane to reverse the effects. Don’t recommend getting bitten by one. Anyways, Red stole the spell book back and returned it to Blossom after all of that.

-Weeds can turn into members of a “flock” and members of a “flock” can turn into Weeds. (Lethe went from Weeds to > Lily and Knight Devil went from Rose > Weeds.)

-Anyways that all happened within the first week or two and it only gets wilder from there, we're very sorry and also welcome.

Mysterious objects that occasionally find their way to the flocks' hands by equally mysterious means after a particularly successful rite. They appear to be indestructible, or at least very hardy, with a durability exceeding diamond. Stick two together, and they will cling to each other and form a larger piece.

If you have any theories for how these come to be and what they do, please speculate here.

What's going on? Where am I?

You've been brought here via magic. You weren't chosen intentionally; the magic grabs people at random. This is an entirely different world than you're familiar with. While it's possible for people to return from here, it's currently not something that can be done reliably.

Why don't I remember my name? Or someone else's name?

This is normal. It's impossible to remember the name of anyone present here, including yourself. People usually pick new names to go by. You can match your flock's theme if you want.

Rarely, people can lose memories of more than their name. But don't worry, they're recoverable.

What's with this collar?

Everyone brought here has one, and the color indicates what group you belong to.

If you have a colored collar, you're a member of a flock, and were brought here to help out the residents of this place. If you have a black collar, you are a Weed, and were brought here to interfere and cause chaos. (Though those are the intents, you're not forced to do anything.)

The flocks are:

Yellow: Daffodil
Blue: Bluebell
White: Lily
Red: Rose
Green: Clover
Purple: Thistle
Pink: Peony
Black: Weed

What's with all the sheep?

Due to a past conflict, all the residents here have been transformed into animals and lost some or all of their memories. The sheep are people who've lost themselves entirely. Some notable residents who are still able to talk and interact include:

Blossom: A pink sheep; her magic brought the flocks here.
Stormy: A black sheep; he's associated with Blossom.
Red: A fox dressed in sheepskin; he runs a shop where you can get small items for free, or larger ones for doing tasks he finds entertaining. This includes things from other worlds - but caution, his tasks can be violent or distasteful.
Daisy: A cow; she runs a shop where you can get foodstuffs. Her tasks tend to be kinder.
The snake: A snake; his magic brought the weeds here.

What is the point of a flock?

Flocks each live together in their appropriately colored barn. Weeds live independently, though there's a clubhouse that lodges some of them at the edge of the pasture.

Each flock is led by a shepherd, who can locate their flock members no matter where they are.

Flocks have magic specific to their flock: a healing power, and two or more other powers. You can obtain them by touching the crystal flower in your flock's barn.

Flocks also work together for rites and rituals.

What is a rite?

When flocks do activities together, it generates a power that can create things from nothing. Flocks also have particular activities relevant to their flock's theme that generate more power.

What is a ritual?

Rituals usually occur when someone summons a demon. This can be done by any of the residents, by Weeds, or in rare cases unintentionally, by spilling blood on a sigil.

During a ritual, people are forced into unusual situations and activities, often competitive. These can range from innocuous party games to deadly dilemmas.

Deadly???

Unfortunately, yes. Fortunately, death is not as permanent as it could be. Death is a conscious entity, and she can be looking or not, which you can tell by the eye on the fountain at the center of town. When the eye is closed, people can be quickly revived by putting their bodies in the fountain or by a member of Lily. When the eye is open, the situation is much worse, but still potentially recoverable. (It is not advised to die when the eye is open.)

What's the point of participating in rituals?

Winners of rituals are rewarded with coins that can display a memory (especially important if you are missing them), and sometimes with other benefits, like additions to their barn or other items. Winning also usually removes any negative effects of the ritual itself.

In some cases, losers of rituals are punished with effects lingering beyond the end of the ritual.

What other dangers are there?

Outside the larger fence are more dangerous animals. Further out in the mist it is extremely dangerous. The mist can't be navigated without a Weed, and even Weeds are attacked by the wolf-like creatures out there. If you are bitten by one, you need a special treatment, so please let someone know immediately.

I have so many more questions.

There's a book in the clinic that serves as a collaborative record. If there's any information you can't find there, ask your flockmates, and then please add it to the book!

There's also a library, if you're looking for more general information.

Thank you and good luck!

THE STORY SO FAR

[personal profile] reportinastorm 2024-08-17 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
((A transcription of Red's summary of the story so far, text copy-pasted here for ease of ctrl+F. There are pictures at the link though, which are also included in the book ))

Once upon a time, you were all brought here by Blossom! Blossom is is the little Pink Sheep that keeps fucking up! She really is trying to send you all home, but you being here has already made things a lot better~ And you've been able to find your own ways back. Which is to say, your shepherd can send ya back once your connection to this world has been severed.

Anywho!

The story as it was told, is the Wolf King, massive, mountain sized shadow beast of a wolf is out there gobbling up people in the mist! Aaaall out of despair because his beloved child was killed boohoo.

But wait, what a twist! It turns out Blossom was that child all along~ That's right, the only daughter of the wolf king, who faked her death, aaall so she could stay by the side of the prince she secretly pines after!

And that prince? It's Stormy! Prince--well, you know by now you shouldn't say true names outloud, so! [HE TAPS AT THE PICTURE] The Prince of the fallen king Stormia~ In order to save what remains of his kingdom. . .well first they were sacrificing people to the Gold Demon, but that was kinda fucked up! So instead, he offered himself to the Earth Spirit. In exchange for their memories, everyone would be safe and hidden away from the Wolf King for eternity~ All except Blossom of course, the sole keeper of everyone's past. Golly!

But wait, who's the Earth Spirit, you ask! Why, a Holy Beast! There are Four of them!

Gem Deer- The Earth Spirit, who keeps this pasture alive and pretty much everything else! I suppose he's the Holy Beast of Life in a way. It really likes Bluebell~ It can traverse the mist completely safely. It had been hunted by wolves, but Bluebell saved them!

Forever Snake - The Time Spirit, and the reason why it seems no one has aged! It's everywhere, always, all the time! If you see any ~scaley~ types, they likely come from a pasture that worships it. It really likes Rose~ Probably because they saved it from the wolves harvesting its scales!

The Death - The Death Spirit! She's a lot more talkative nowadays~ But her Eye is what allows you lot to be revived! She's particularly fond of Bluebell and Lily, but also she WILL kill you. Don't push your luck~ Though, has anyone figured out why she's so amenable. . .?

Dream Sheep - Those two moons in the sky every night? Surprise, they're eyes! The Dream Spirit is what allows you to share dreams, astral project, and the source of each Flock's unique powers! She has a special affinity for Clover~

Now that's all the pasture stuff! But what's out there? Who are all those wolves? Well, they're just like sheep--just from the land of the Wolf King! The proper term is ~wolf-kind~, basically anyone who has 'carnivorous' traits, like Coco or Vera! The current ruler of wolf-kind is Blossom's brother--Ceo!

Oh, did I neglect to mention that? Yeppers, she has a big brother! And he has no idea she's still alive! He still thinks a sheep killed her loooong ago, so he's go a grudge against most sheep! I wonder why she won't tell him? Maybe he wouldn't have kidnapped you all back then if he'd known, keeheehee!

Oh, but just so you know--he doesn't hate aaaall sheep-kind. His ~partner~ was the former Peony Priest, "Naythan". Turns out, their pastures were helpin' each other out for a while before the wolf king overpowered them. How sad!

Speaking of the Wolf King! If he gets ya, you get absorbed into him and turned into an eternally suffering mass of souls. Fun!! Of course, it seems a bit different for you lot. You just seem to turn into werewolves. Neat! Looks like Ceo's found a way to stave off the infection using special masks, but who knows if that's sustainable~

Aaand finally, demons! Ya know, those wacky guys we summon for rituals~ They're mostly kind of a neutral faction, and both wolves and sheep make use of their power! I heard a rumor though, that wolves and sheep relied moreso on the power of Dreams and Nightmares before~ It seems turning to more demonic means was out of desperation! Though now, the demons seem preeeeetty upset. That's why they've been making life more hard for ya lately! Wonder what that's about, hm?

But anywho! Not all demons are bad. Daisy and Coco utilize friendly ones--or at least they're friendly now, thanks to Daffodil~ But they're why ya have more to eat than fruit and grass! If ya have a demon on your side, don't worry about it turnin' on ya. But if it's summoned for a Ritual, be careful, especially if you have your real names~

Anyway, while there are several ways to "kill" demons, the only way to permanently put 'em down or seal them away, outside of a gift from Death, is obtain their heart, and perform a ritual using the rune of your assigned Flower. Like Lupin here~ Who knew?

[and he claps his hands together]

And that's it! The whole history, more or less~
